At approximately 10:00 am, on July 5th, 2007, the Utah Highway Patrol, and Wasatch County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene of a single-vehicle crash that took the life of Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Michael James Penovich.

Following a morning meeting in the Heber City area, Chief Penovich was traveling southbound on Hwy. 189, returning to Saratoga Springs City. The crash occurred adjacent to the Deer Creek Reservoir, in Wasatch County. The vehicle, a fire truck, being operated by Chief Penovich, left the roadway, and traveled down a 75 foot embankment, struck the shoreline, and drifted into the reservoir. Chief Penovich died from injuries related to this accident. The Utah Highway Patrol is currently investigating the continuing details of the crash.

Chief Michael J. Penovich, 38, was employed by the City of Saratoga Springs, as its Fire Chief, since April 2006. He is described, by his wife and children, as a wonderful husband and father. He is also described by his fellow Firefighters and co-workers as a caring, loving public servant. He loved what he did, and was devoted to his profession.

Chief Penovich grew up in the Chandler, AZ. area, graduated from Lehi High School, and attended Scottsdale Community College. He was also an instructor at its Fire Academy. His hobbies included his love of horses. Mike was also an award winning rodeo participant.

Chief Penovich leaves behind his wife, Michelle, two children, and the love and prayers of his crew, fellow city employees, and the grateful citizens of Saratoga Springs and Cedar Fort.
