Public Works Department - Secondary Water Maintenance I Employee

Performs and is responsible for assisting in the ongoing operation and maintenance of the secondary water system and other duties around the City.
Job description includes but is not limited to the following: Performs a variety of working level apprentice duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the secondary water supply, transmission and distribution system; monitors pressure stations and telemetering equipment. Operates backhoe and trenching equipment; performs installation or repair of water service connections, water lines and meters, repairs or replaces plugged water meters; repairs and/or locates water mains and individual shut of valves; cleans and maintains storage tanks and retention basins; may conduct water sampling; may read residential and commercial water meters. Installs new water lines using forklift, pipe-threader, tapping machine, welder, pipe cutting saw, pipe and cable locator; repairs old water lines; tears out and repairs curb, gutter and street in locating and uncovering broken lines; builds meter boxes; builds extensions to raise or lower existing boxes as needed. Operates a variety of hand tools and small power equipment. Participates in work zone safety procedures; flags on coming vehicles to protect the public and workers; sets up warning signs. Searches out shut off valves; water lines leaks; assists in placement of pipe, getting system up and running during the summer months and other duties as assigned. This employee also functions as one of the City's principal “on-call” employees for after hours emergencies related to area of responsibility and snow plowing.
Minimum qualifications may include graduation from high school and/or two(2) years of experience working with public works systems such as streets, water facilities, sewer facilities, storm drainage; or an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience. Applicants should have the ability to obtain OSHA Confined Space Certification, OSHA Trench Safety Training, First Aid and CPR Certification, and a Utah CDL License within (6) months of hiring. Must be able to lift 50-75 pounds.
